Drugs

In today's blog i have decided to write about the lecture we had on drugs. Unlike many people my age i have never actually tried what would be classed as "proper drugs' e.g. cannabis, coke and speed.

I believe this is down to the good education that i had providing me with all the information about the side effects and how potentially life destroying they can be. I found it particularly interesting hearing about the reasons that people turn to drugs, and how sad a lot of them tended to be.

One part that particularly caught my attention was the story of a girl that was left in a coma after taking ecstasy on her birthday, what was particularly shocking was that the girls mother was a nurse and should have therefore had enough stories about the tragedies of drug taking, to prevent this form ever happening.

There usage of drugs also seems to be heavily glamorized by the media and celebrities, with people such as Amy Winehouse as negative role models. You only have to google her name to be bombarded with news stories such as "Winehouse leaves hospital straight to stage" http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/latest/2010/04/28/winehouse-leaves-hospital-for-stage-115875-22218989/

Children need their role models to portray a negative image of drugs rather than to give the impression that they are an accepted and necessary part of society.

Response to Nats Blog

I think that it is very sad that women have to turn to prostitution as a way to make a means, especially with all the risks that are involved - both to their health and their lives.

Rape

One of the areas that has not been covered in 'being bad' rape. This is a very serious subject that like many of the topics i have discussed is constantly in the media attention. There are many tragic stories about victims being subjected to this horrific ordeal, who have to live with the physiological effects for the rest of lives. I feel that it is one of the worst areas of crime as it can have such a crippling effect on that persons life. One of the recent stories that is particularly shocking can be seen at ttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/essex/8641807.stm

One area that has also taken an unfortunate rise is that of women accusing men of rape as a way to get back at them or gain media attention e.g the case of Jack Tweed. This is a tragic waste of valuable court time.

I agree with what you are saying, people cheat if they are unhappy with the relationship that they are in or if they are not getting enough sex within that relationship, it could be because that person is away all the time e.g civil services or because they simply don't have the same sex drive as the other person. however i feel that it is very unfair to cheat on a person, if you are unhappy tell them and try to work on it. if no resolution can be achieved i feel that you should end it before someone gets hurt.

You Love Rat!

Cheating - one of the media's biggest sellers, there are not many publications you can pick up without seeing some sort of infidelity story splashed across the pages. From the recent media coverage of Tiger Woods to cases such of that of a women in America who sued her husbands lover for 9 million dollars! (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/7506789/Wifes-9m-victory-in-adultery-case-warns-mistresses-to-lay-off.html)

So why this fascination with cheating? is it because we all like to see other failings to make us feel better about our selves or is it because secretly we are hoping it wont happen to us?

Unfortunately when there is a new 'Hot Story' there is always going to be a victim, we always feel sorry for them, but never entertain the idea that it could be us, we all believe like so many things it only happens to 'other' people.

Tattoo's - Body Art?

Tattoo's, many people have them and many people want them, but for what reasons? There are many different reasons why people choose to have tattoos- essentially a permanent body modification. These can include reasons such as Fashion, Culture, Memorial, Rebellion and Religion.

In today's Culture they are seen as a lot more acceptable than they previously have but i feel that they still hold a lot of stigma attached to them, if you were an employer hiring a high end executive, who regularly meets with clients and represents the company, would you employ someone that has large tattoo's up their arms? - the answer is probably no. The main reason is that tattoos have traditionally been stereo typed as that of criminals and generally bad characters. there is also a lot of evidence that shows taht having a tattoo can affect your job prospects available in the media and the internet. http://www.youngmoney.com/careers/career-advice/030127_04/

Despite this i feel that they are now more widely accepted and also seen as a major part of fashion and personal expression, who are we to tell people what they can and cant do?

Masturbation

I found this weeks lecture on masturbation really interesting, i feel that it raised many interesting questions such as why is it considered to be bad behavior and why is it people find it either humorous or disgusting? I also found the information about the Victorians view on masturbation quite surprising that they were so against it and having seen some of the pictures of "devises" that they used to prevent it - ouch!

First real blogg so hope its ok! I have decided to look at smoking. As i do not smoke personally my own thoughts are going to be a lot different to that of a smoker, however having nearly all my family members smoke (that are old enough) i know what its like to be around them and subjected to second hand smoke. Since i was little i can remember being struck in the car with my dad smoking away filling up the car , i hated it and him for it. I also found it very unfair that i had to then go to school stinking of smoke. I understand that people are free to make their own choices and i respect that as their choice to smoke but really is it fair to inflict that on others? I have also spent a considerable amount of time working in pubs before and after the smoking ban and feel that although there was great opposition to it, it has been a fantastic break for those that do not smoke. why should someone who works in a public place be subjected to someone elses smoke- they do not have a choice where as the smoker does? surely that is infringing on their human rights?
