In today's blog i have decided to write about the lecture we had on drugs. Unlike many people my age i have never actually tried what would be classed as "proper drugs' e.g. cannabis, coke and speed.
I believe this is down to the good education that i had providing me with all the information about the side effects and how potentially life destroying they can be. I found it particularly interesting hearing about the reasons that people turn to drugs, and how sad a lot of them tended to be.
One part that particularly caught my attention was the story of a girl that was left in a coma after taking ecstasy on her birthday, what was particularly shocking was that the girls mother was a nurse and should have therefore had enough stories about the tragedies of drug taking, to prevent this form ever happening.
There usage of drugs also seems to be heavily glamorized by the media and celebrities, with people such as Amy Winehouse as negative role models. You only have to google her name to be bombarded with news stories such as "Winehouse leaves hospital straight to stage" http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/latest/2010/04/28/winehouse-leaves-hospital-for-stage-115875-22218989/
Children need their role models to portray a negative image of drugs rather than to give the impression that they are an accepted and necessary part of society.
